FACTORS AFFECT GLASS ACOUSTIC PERFORMANCE

Glass thickness,PVB thickness,Spacer thickness in IGU affect the overall glass acoustic performance.

Glass thickness,or glass unit weight per square meter is the deciding factor that affect the overall soundproof performance.

Whether it’s single piece monolithic glass,laminated glass,or insulated glass,the thicker total glass thickness,the better sound transmission loss.Sample STC:

PVB or SGP,EVA, these materials used in laminated glass are soft materials with uneven surface,it can decrease the vibration and work as good barrier for sound transmission.

Normal laminated glass or insulated glass,the glass panels used are always the same,while unequal thickness glass used in these combinations will change the glass sound transmittance loss even though the effect is not good as expection.

The spacer thickness used in insulated glass will also affect the STC,bigger spacer will have better STC.That’s the reason why many theaters need thicker insulated glass to get better noise control effect.

Argon used in the insulated glass not only protect the glass coatings,increase the thermal insulation perfromance,but also decrease the glass STC.As argon is inert gas,the sound conductivity is also lower than normal air filled insulated glass.
